2 More MIT Students Become Rhodes Scholars On Saturday evening, the Rhodes Trust announced the 32 Americans who have won the 2008 Rhodes Scholarships. The Rhodes Scholarship, described as the oldest and best known award for international study, includes among its winners political figures like Bill Clinton, George Stephanopoulos and David Souter; scientists like Edwin Hubble, Robert J. van de Graaff and Brian Greene; and journalists like Nicholas Kristof, Michael Kinsley and Walter Isaacson. Long time readers may remember the excitement last year when one of our then-senior bloggers, Melis, was named a Rhodes Scholar. This years list of winners includes not one but two awesome MIT students: Matt Gethers 09 and Alia Whitney-Johnson 08. Here are the biographies of Alia and Matt from RhodesScholar.org (links mine), followed by the MIT News Office story: Alia Whitney-Johnson, Leicester [North Carolina], will graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in December, majoring in civil and environmental engineering. A Truman Scholar, she was also named as one of Glamour Magazine’s top ten college women in 2007. In 2005, Alia founded a nonprofit business, Emerge Global, which seeks to empower young Sri Lankan mothers made pregnant through rape and incest. She has remained its executive director as it has won worldwide recognition. Alia has also led many other programs relating to poverty, women’s rights, and race relations. She plans to do the M.Phil. in development studies at Oxford. Matthew L. Gethers III, Waterbury [Connecticut], is a senior at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where is majors in biological engineering and also has a concentration in political science. He has for three years worked in a lab analyzing the effects of recombinant protein expression on host cell growth rate. He is a varsity fencer, an active volunteer emergency medical technician, and a tutor for underprivileged students. He eventually plans to pursue a doctorate in biological engineering, but first will read for the B.A. in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford. Two from MIT win Rhodes Scholarships November 22, 2008 Two MIT students, Matt Gethers and Alia Whitney-Johnson, have won prestigious Rhodes Scholarships to study next year at Oxford University in Britain. Gethers, a biological engineering major and political science concentration, has been involved in multiple research opportunities during his time at MIT. Soon after arriving at the Institute, Gethers joined the laboratory of Drew Endy, now an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford. While in Endys lab, he conducted research aimed at enabling engineers to encode memory systems genetically to assist in the study and treatment of diseases. This past summer, Gethers sought a way to continue research after his mentor left for California, so he approached John Essigmann, the William R. (1956) and Betsy P. Leitch Professor in Residence of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and a professor of toxicology in the Department of Biological Engineering, to lead an IROP in Thailand. Matt was so enthusiastic to gain international research experience that he raised enough money to bring not only himself and both Drs. Essigmann [Prof. Essigmann and his research scientist wife], but also six other MIT students to conduct research at the Chulabhorn Research Institute in Bangkok, said Linn Hobbs, chair of the Presidential Committee on Distinguished Fellowships and professor of Materials Science Engineering and Nuclear Science Engineering. It is a role that becomes Matt, because he is not only a brilliant young scientist, but also an articulate young man so clearly dedicated to public service. Gethers has engaged in a variety of public service work throughout his undergraduate career. After successful training by the MIT Emergency Medical Service, Gethers became a third rider for the MIT ambulance, logging more than 50 hours per semester. For four years, he has weekly visited local Cambridge schools to tutor students in a variety of subjects. Simultaneously, he has served as the vice president for the MIT chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a group that honors academic success while encouraging students to participate in community service. In NCAA Division I competition, Gethers has led his team to two New England championships. Gethers will now travel to Oxford University to read for a degree in the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Programme. Kimberly Benard, program advisor for Distinguished Fellowships said, It seems to us an unexpected but inspired choice for an articulate young scientist who values engagement with his communities. After earning a degree from Oxford, Matt plans to return to the United States to pursue a PhD in biological engineering. The second Rhodes winner, Whitney-Johnson, is a senior in civil environmental engineering, former Truman Scholar and one of Glamour Magazines Top Ten College Women. In 2005, she founded Emerge Global, a non-profit organization that seeks to empower young Sri Lankan mothers many of them children themselves made pregnant through rape and incest. Whitney-Johnson first saw the need for such a program after receiving an MIT public service grant to provide volunteer relief in Sri Lanka following the devastating tsunami. She ended up spending time in a shelter established to provide a minimal refuge for these girls while their assailants many of whom are their own relatives are prosecuted. Whitney-Johnson realized that these girls, ostracized and shunned, needed a vehicle to regain their self-esteem. Since she was already an accomplished jewelry maker, having designed under her own label since 2000, she decided to teach these young mothers how to create beaded jewelry. Alia then has assisted them in selling their jewelry both in Colombo and in the United States. We are delighted that Alia was granted a Rhodes Scholarship, what we most wished for her was that she be provided further opportunities to continue her own development and even wider stages on which to practice her commitment to helping others like she has already done through Emerge Global, said Hobbs. Her irrepressible energy has inspired countless MIT students (and administrators, it might be added) to engage in more service work, said Benard. Whitney-Johnsons ultimate goal, however, is not solely to enlarge Emerge Global, but to extend its key concept: empowerment. She plans to continue her education in international development, so that she can expand Emerge Global and found similar organizations elsewhere and has therefore decided to undertake the MSc course in development studies at Oxfords Queen Elizabeth House. Depictions of Childhood Emotion in Half-past Two and Piano - Literature Essay Samples

The following essay will explore how recollections of childhood are presented in â€Å"Half-past Two†, by U.A. Fanthorpe, a poem through which a child talks about their experience of getting a detention and not knowing why, and not quite being able to comprehend the time fully. The essay will also focus on â€Å"Piano†, by D.H. Lawrence, a poem through which a nostalgic man who misses his mother and longs for the sound of her playing the piano again. Both poems present childhood memories as unsettling, yet the clear negative tone assumed by Fanthorpe contrasts with the positive yearning expressed in Lawrences composition. Firstly, in â€Å"Half-past Two†, the boy’s experiences of not being able to read the time are stressed. He seems to know what happens at certain times of the day, for example â€Å"Gettinguptime† and â€Å"Timetogohomenowtime†, however he cannot quite understand the meaning of â€Å"half-past two†. This neologism implies that he knows these times well and fluently, as they are not something he ever had to work out for himself, so they just seem like one thing. Furthermore, although he seems to know what a clock looks like- â€Å"He knew the cock face†, he â€Å"couldn’t click its language†. This personification shows that he is immature and it creates a visual image of what something which he cannot understand, which gives the poem a tone of frustration. This is similar to Lawrence’s â€Å"Piano†, in that his persona too is bothered and affected by his childhood. In â€Å"Piano†, the man is talking about ho w he wishes to go back to when he was a child and hear his mother sing, however in his poem, it could be seen as a positive thing to look back of from one viewpoint, which contrasts with â€Å"half-past two†, when it is something annoying which the child could not get their head around. However, in â€Å"Piano†, when the man says â€Å"my manhood is cast†, it shows that on the other hand, he could have erectile dysfunction, as his mother has destroyed his adult life. In â€Å"Half-past Two†, the poem follows a continuous pattern and each of the eleven stanzas consists three lines, three triplets. This links in with the strictness of the teacher who is addressed as â€Å"She†, with a capital â€Å"S†, showing that she is like royalty or something ethereal, so it is therefore crucial to obey her. Perhaps this is also why â€Å"He was too scared of being wicked to remind her.)† Also, the fact that this and â€Å"(I forgot what it was)†, referring to the time, suggests that these are just thoughts that are not important and should be dismissed, as the most important thing to do is obey her. However, in â€Å"Piano†, the last two stanzas out of three are quatrains, which contrasts to the first paragraph which consists of six lines due to its use of enjambment. Perhaps this is to emphasise the slow rhythm and movement of the poem, whilst â€Å"half-past two† is strict and has a stressful rhythm. The enja mbment slows the pace down even more and the uses of the words â€Å"strings† and â€Å"sings† are sibilance, which gives the poem a soft and gentle tone. Furthermore, â€Å"Piano† also consists of rhyming couplets throughout, where as â€Å"Half-past Two† does not, which further emphasises its lilting tone that is full of wonder. Moreover, in â€Å"Piano†, D.H. Lawrence uses both metaphors and similes to express his tears and crying. For example â€Å"Down the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child†. This suggests both his childish nature, and his inability to hold back his tears, which links in with the use of onomatopoeia to describe the piano- â€Å"burst into clamour/With the great black piano appassionato†, as they both describe some dramatic happening and the word â€Å"burst† could be used to describe someone crying. This shows that him and his mothers piano playing had a strong connection and are similar, which is perhaps why he is so desperate to revisit this moment. Furthermore, the word â€Å"black† has connotations with danger and something mysterious, like the dark, which suggests that he perhaps is disturbed by his illness and the fact that wishes to be in a relationship with his mother that his father ruined. This is further implied through the use of pathe tic fallacy- â€Å" winter outside†. This sense of not being able to understand somebody is similar to what we hear about in â€Å"Half-past Two†. It is further implied through the image in the final stanza of the boy â€Å"escaping into the clockless land forever/Where time hides tick-less waiting to be born†. This idea of being re-born further shows that Fanthorpe sees something wrong in the child and does not know what to do about it, just like how the man sees himself in â€Å"Piano†. Furthermore, the childish language and creation of a new word in â€Å"half-past two† when Fanthorpe talks about â€Å"the clockless land†, suggests that the boy was a mistake, as he does not deserve to be in the normal world with the rest of us. The childhood in â€Å"Piano† is presented as something which the man wants to revisit, and D.H. Lawrence emphasises this through the nostalgic tone of his language. On the other hand, in â€Å"Half-past Two†, the childhood is seen more as a bad memory, as the child did something â€Å"Very Wrong†. However, the two poems are similar in the way in which they discuss childhood memories which are disturbing and and have large impacts on the main characters involved.

OBriens title provides both an accurate description of how the story is organized mainly by lists, with the narrative seeming an almost accidental intrusion but also as a sort of recurrent musical refrain in the text itself. The title phrase is repeated at semi-regular intervals in the text, and encourages the reader to understand the catalogue of items as adding up to something larger than the mere objects described. It is important to recognize, however, that the objects are in fact described with painstaking accuracy, and not impressionistically; as Kaplan notes of OBriens style in this story, all of the things are depicted in a style that is almost scientific in its precision. We are told how much each subject weighs, either psychologically or physically, and in the case of artillery we are even told how many ounces each round weighed. The open market in the United States allows for many individuals and businesses to develop and grow their capital so long as financial regulation is handled properly. Proper regulation of loans allows for reasonable restriction towards speculation and encourages business expansion. When regulation is loosely held the economy suffers from misrepresentation of loans and broker ignorance. This can be represented through the New York Stock Exchange crash of 1929, which holds many similarities to the events leading to and after the United States subprime mortgage crisis. Increased popularity of on-margin loans almost directly correlate to the subprime mortgages that were made widely available in the first decade of the twenty first century. Brokers and loan originators, who fabricated on-margin and subprime mortgage loans, increased country-wide economic risk by encouraging individuals to accept monetary burdens they could not possibly afford. Also, as individuals continued to purchase on credit, a market economic bubble was formed. I Attended Wheaton s Christmas Festival - 830 Words

For this extra credit concert review, I attended Wheaton’s Christmas Festival. I was going anyway and thought I would write a review for it to get some kind of credit. There was a lot performed during this concert and it is not possible to discuss everything in detail so I will discuss the overall atmosphere and some of the specific performances that I particularly enjoyed. The concert started with Claire Holly singing Once in a Royal David’s City composed by Henry J. Gauntlett in 1849 (Hawn and Hanna). It was a solo performance and it was peaceful. The Symphonic Band then played and this was followed by everyone, including the audience, singing Come thou Long Expected Jesus composed by Charles Wesley in 1744 (Carrol). Next, which I will discuss in more detail, Wolcum Yole composed by Benjamin Britten in 1942 (Wolcum Yole!). This was interesting to listen to because we have spoken about Benjamin Britten in class. This piece was mainly monophonic and contained a lot of a gitated style. It was not smooth; it was all over the place. This is a much more modern song as one can tell. It strays away from the much more conservative-style pieces that Giovanni Artusi was an advocate for in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They met when they were kids, as Thebedi used to work on Paulus’ father’s farm. They used to sneak out and meet at the river bed. Even after Paulus killed their baby girl, Thebedi still wore them when she accused him of â€Å"pouring liquid into the baby’s mouth† (as cited in Clugston, 2010). Even in her hysteric situation, she still wore those earring that Paulus gave to her. She wore them again when they went to trial. This leads me to believe that after all was said and done, she still loved Paulus, even though she knew they could never be together. Another symbol that is relevant to the theme is their baby. Their baby was living proof that they were in love with each other. After seeing the baby with his own eyes, Paulus seemed to have panicked; anyone who looked at this child would know that it was not Njabulo’s. Njabulo was Thebedi’s husband who was the â€Å"opaque coffee-grounds colour that had always been called black [†¦] the same colour of Thebedi’s face† (as cited in Clugston, 2010). They would know that the father of this child was a white man. In their culture, it was socially unacceptable to have interracial relationships. Paulus felt he had to get rid of the baby, and he did. Imagery also contributes to the theme of forbidden love. One day Thebedi and Paulus met at the riverbed. Gordimer noted that the girls that Paulus went to school with would swim in bikinis and they never made him feel like Thebedi did â€Å"when [she] came up the bank and sat beside him, the drops of water beading off her dark legs the only points of light in the earth-smelling deep shade† (as cited in Clugston, 2010). The image of Thebedi, a regular African American girl, making Paulus feel like he had never felt before contributes to the theme of forbidden love. Local color is another literary element that strengthens the theme in Country Lovers. Local color is defined as â€Å"unique images, realistic dialog and true-to-life descriptions to fully portray people and life in the region where the story will occur† (Clugston, 2010, ch 6. 1, para 1). I figured if I said I wasnt hungry then my friends will offer me their food, and in the end I wouldnt have to pull out my wallet. A lesson of how to budget money is to be learned from this situation. Many times in everyday life, you must learn how to save money, in other word being what I like to call tite, or tight, as it is commonly known. Being tight, in fact, is a sure way to save money. So, if you are on a budget, the instructions that follow provide the best policy. Eventually, you will have to pay for or share something. Thus, you should learn how to be tight to avoid these certain situations as much as possible. First and foremost, before you decide to be tight, you must understand the concept of a good excuse. For instance, saying you dont have money and then going to the mall and buying an eighty-dollar shirt cannot easily be justified; however, your purchase can be justified if you claim your girlfriend bought the shirt for you. In addition, another good excuse when trying to avoid these situations is saying that you forgot your wallet at home. The leaving your wallet at home excuse is the most common excuse known to tight people. When you are stuck in a situation where you are about to be called tight, this excuse always does the trick. However, you shouldnt overuse this excuse because just like a pair of tennis shoes it gets worn out quickly. When you are hungry, it is always important to check how much money is present in your wallet. If, after looking at your wallet and finding that you are no longer hungry, wait for others to invite you to eat, for an invitation to eat is a sure ticket in not paying for the meal. So be calm and be tight and let others treat you to a meal, which you dont have to pay. In the end, your hunger will be satisfied and your wallet will still be full. Knowing who you are eating with is also important in being tight. If the party you are eating with is tighter than you are, suggest driving in two separate cars. Tell your party you will meet them there. Yet, before you leave for the restaurant, make sure to tell your party to order your food for you. Give them an excuse and tell them youll be late and will not have time to eat. Then, by the time you get there, your  food will be ready and free, for your friends would have made it their business to pay for the food. Again as noted, a good excuse should always be made to avoid paying for your food. However, if your plan does not succeed, go to plan B, which encompass the realm of eating off your friends plate to satisfy the hunger of your stomach and the drive for saving money in your wallet. However, as a warning, all plans may lose their effect after prolong use. So, it is crucial for you to alternate your plans and excuses as much as possible. Always view the situation at all angles. Remember, in order to be a good tightwad, a person who is tight, you should always take into consideration the techniques you use in being tight. Soon, someone will catch on to your technique; therefore, change your behavior and pay for a meal every now and then. Yet, before you pay, remember that next time your friends will pay for you. McNicolas and Collis (1995) performed in-depth interviews and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale in order to determine what level of autism was demonstrated by the participants in their stud. The participants ranged from severely to moderately autistic and many participants had exhibited aggressive behaviors in social situations involving family members and peers. McNicolas and Collis (1995) interviewed the mothers of the participants in order to assess how children responded to an introductory therapy session with animals being used in an animal assisted therapy session. When interviewed the parents of the participants indicated that the children had demonstrated several behavior changes in their interactions with the therapy animals, and with the people that were present in the room as well. The behaviors that McNicolas and Collis (1995)were looking for included greeting seeking of closeness or proximity seeking and giving of comfort, conflicts, companionship and play. The results of the interviews demonstrated that participants in the study exhibited behaviors significantly different from the behaviors that parents had indicated as being normal. Accordng to McNicolas and Collis (1995) the participants sought the therapy animals out as companions because they allowed the child to exhibit behaviors such as touching and hugging that they rarely show to family members or peers. The participants showed greater sensitivity for the needs of the therapy animals. They demonstrated neither anger, nor aggression towards the therapy animals. The implication of this research is that autistic children have the capability to express emotions in the same way that non-autistic children do. According to Duncan (1995), the primary way in which animal assisted therapy is used with physically disabled children is to help children in dealing with loneliness. Duncan (1995) states that physically disabled children often experience loneliness because their disability restricts them from interacting and forming relationships with their peers. This leads physically disabled children to feel socially isolated. Social isolation in physically disabled children can greatly affect their feelings and emotions. Duncan (1995) states that there are several variables that can create feelings of loneliness including disability. Animals act as companions to people who are lonely, including physically disabled children. This is because a pet is always there for a disabled child, and provides company to improve the childs mood, and prevent depression. Therapy animals have also been shown to be useful in the treatment of abused and neglected children. They also blame themselves for the abuse, which leads to feelings of social isolation. Animal assisted therapy helps abused and neglected children learn to define normal and appropriate affection, and appropriate social limits and boundaries. These behaviors are not taught in abusive or neglectful homes therefore, abused and neglected children often demonstrate a very -skewed perception of normalcy. Animal assisted therapy has also been used to treat children who have been sexually abused. According to Barker et al (1995), animals can provide support to children who are at high risk for psychological problems due to sexual abuse. Barker et al (1995) states that this is because therapy animals are perceived as being less threatening then people. Animal assisted therapy has been demonstrated to help sexually abused children heal from the trauma created by the abuse because the animals help the child to lessen the pain created by the abuse. Although some experts have stated that therapy, animals have the ability to empathize with physically or psychologically disabled children Blackman (2003) states that there is no empirical evidence to support this theory. Conclusion Animal assisted therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of children with physical disabilities, psychological disabilities, and children who have been abused or neglected. In many cases traditional methods of psychotherapy do not work with these children either because they are unwilling to trust an adult with their problems, or that the problem is to deep seated for traditional therapy to be adequate. The current era, also known as the information era, have involved in workers in the creation, distribution and the use of information. However, an adaptive and assistive device is also being invented to aid the disabled in using the computer. An assistive device can allow disabled people to accomplish daily living tasks, work, and education or recreation activities. It helps them enhance their quality of life and achieve greater independence. Assistive Technology devices can also improve physical and mental functioning, overcome a disorder and impairment, and strengthen a mental or physical weakness, aid people in improving their capacity to learn or even replace a missing limb. 2.0 Adaptive input and output devices An adaptive device is a structure, instrument or equipment which makes life easier for people who has a disability physically or mentally. It is a product which helps people who is not able to use regular version of products. It is invented for people with physical disabilities such as limitation to vision, hearing or mobility. Adaptive technology helps with greater effectiveness for people with functional limits or incapacities by allowing them to complete tasks that they were not able or had great difficulty to complete. Adaptive Technology also provides different methods of interacting with or enhancements in communication to the disabled. The personal computer (PC) can be the support of independence for lots of individuals with physical, sensory and learning disabilities. Many individuals with disabilities face several problems in terms of computer input, or using a computer for reading documentation on the monitor and interpreting output. For the disabled, the keyboard, mouse and monitor are the prime concern so adaptive and assistive software and hardware have been invented to provide assistants. Screen reader programs are created to allow a totally blind person to use the computer. These programs convert texts and icons into dialogue so one is able use a computer without the need to look at the monitor. PC access and accessible computer equipment aids can make computer users easier to use word processing programs, send e-mail, and surf the internet, but also able to aid non-computer users to handle many non-computer tasks. System which aids individuals who are not independent in verbal communication is known as an augmentative communication system. This system can include speech, sign language, gestures, synthesized speech, symbols, dedicated communication aids or microcomputers. This device allows users to automate data captured from forms, eliminate keystrokes quickly to reduce data entry costs and still maintain the high level of accuracy required in forms processing applications. Â  It has the ability to scan printed text or document and then speak it back in synthetic speech to the users or save it to a computer. Screen Reader The screen readers are software programs which provide speech or Braille output. It allows a visually impaired person to read text or words on the computer screen and identify icons on the Desktop or buttons which is graphic like on a toolbar. The user receives info from the computers sound card or the speech synthesizer.Screen readers are commonly employed by person who is blind or visually impaired. Screen reader also allows the user to navigate the computer using the keyboard instead of the mouse. Besides listening to the information read by the screen reader, some people prefer using a refreshable Braille display. A Braille display is different from the computer screen. The Braille display is usually located close or below the keyboard. The screen reader sends information on the screen to the Braille display. Then, the user put his fingers on the display and read the information in Braille as it appears on the Braille display. Braille displays for useful to people who are deaf and blind and people who work on a job which involve them to speak to clients on the phone or in a place which require people to remain silent like a library. A screen reader uses text to speech synthesizer to send information out about what is displaying on the screen as it is a memory resident program. Currently, system hooks is use to gain access to keyboard input, menu and dialog box messages on most Windows screen readers. The screen reader replaces the monitor as it is used by the blind people. A computer can be used without the use of the monitor with screen reader software that allows the screen display available as synthesized speech. Foot mouse A foot mouse is a computer mouse which is used by a person who has physical disabilities with high-back, neck, limited or no use in their upper arms. The foot mouse can be used to control the cursor through the computer software program to select text, icon and other item in the same way as a normal hand mouse. Using a foot mouse can be slower, because most people have less accurate control movements with their legs and feet compare with their hands. Most foot mice have two segments. One segment is used to control the cursor, while the other segment is used for mouse click or to select shortcuts. With this device, a person who is blind is able to navigate through the computers desktop, edit and create documents or browse the internet. Braille Display is also known as Braille Terminal. Usually, Braille display does not require to install a driver for it to function properly as there arent many types of Braille display and screen readers is able to support most of this device. Once the device is enabled, the Braille Display will obtain the text that is currently highlighted on the display, the screen reader will then translate the text from the computer screen in Braille and the Braille Display will display the translated text on its built-in Braille cells. The Braille Displays use nylon pins or metal to make each cell of Braille dots on the device. Braille display is refreshable, this means when the user navigate to a specific line of text, the device shows the texts Braille corresponding and when the user navigates to another line, the device will automatically display the new text in the new line in Braille. Usually there are eight dots in each cell on a Braille Display. This device is mounted onto the computer and it is set focus on the users eye. This device consist of a camera which constantly scans one of the users eye and a sofware which analyses the picture taken by the camera to determine which part on the screen the user is looking at. Users are require to sit in front of the eye gaze pointing device with a specialized video camara mounted at the screen or monitor which observes one of the users eyes. Then the software which works together with the device will continually analyzes the image of the eye from the camera and determine where the user is looking on the screen.
